Propranolol

Anxiety, according to dictionary is, “A permanent state of worry and nervousness that occurs in variety of mental disorders, accompanied by attacks of panic and compulsive behavior”. Social phobia is a common problem seen in people. Propranolol anxiety drug helps in reducing the phobia and aids in attaining stability. The drug is a beta-blocker, sold in United States under the name Inderal (Propranolol la).

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Propranolol used in treatment of angina, cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperthyroid, nervous system disorders such as pheochromocytoma.

Beta-blockers block beta-adrenergic receptor sites in the body and increase risks of blood pressure and increased heartbeat. This medicine reduces blood pressure by lowering the contraction of heart muscle. When contraction of muscle of heart lowered the oxygen required for the heart also lowers. This makes the person breathe easy without any disturbance.

Propranolol anxiety drug does not function well on people who have common social phobia. Instead, it works well only on people who feel nervous during special performances such as stage shows.

10-, 20, 40, 60-80 mg medications preferred by adults, while high doses of 60, 80,120,160 mg capsules are given to patients with serious medical condition. People who don’t have habit of swallowing medicines can prefer oral solution. Oral solution is available in 20mg and 5mg, injection is 1 mg per ml.

For people suffering with hypertension a normal dose of 80-240mg/day is recommend, usually twice a day. The dose is limited to 640 mg. Overdose of the drug induces side effects such as diarrhea, fatigue, abdominal cramps, fatigue, nausea, dreaming, depression etc. People having abnormal heart rhythms must dose 10-30 mg tablets three to four times a day. Nursing mothers and pregnant women must avoid the drug. People having severe heart problems can consult a doctor to get right prescription.
